Lake Murray Like Columbia itself, Lake Murray is situated in the heart of South Carolina. This 48,000-acre, man-made lake earned the nickname of “The Jewel of South Carolina”. As one of the best fishing spots near Columbia, Lake Murray is a gem for catching largemouth bass and striped bass (Bassmasters holds its annual tournament here). This lake has also produced the state record-holders for white perch, white catfish, white crappie, and white bass. Want more than fishing? Lake Murray is surrounded with beaches, parks, campgrounds, and recreation areas. Whether you own a boat or rent one at the lake, you can set sail from one of the marinas or many boat launches. Lake Wateree Formed almost a century ago, Lake Wateree is one of the oldest man-made reservoirs in South Carolina. The lake is located about 30 miles northeast of Columbia and consists of 13,000 acres. You’ll discover great bass fishing here, among others, but the area is also home to a wide variety of wildlife, including a bird refuge. You can experience every type of water sport here, plus find your perfect camping spot—right on the lake or a bit more secluded. Lake Wateree State Park provides 13,800 acres of outdoor fun, including hiking trails to get closer to nature.
